Möglicherweise ist es bereits jemandem aufgefallen, dass ich ein kleinwenig besessen bin von japanischer (Handwerks-) Kunst. Okay, Besessenheit scheint ja im allgemeinen nicht gerade meine kleinste Schwäche zu sein, aber nur fürs Protokoll, ich denke es ist eher ein Fall von totaler Begeisterungsfähigkeit.

Doch zurück zum eigentlichen Thema, Japan. Obwohl der Einfluss Japans auf die Ökonomie und (Ess-) Kultur hoch ist, scheint es immer noch ein etwas fremdartiges Land zu sein. Der Grafikdesigner Kenichi Tanaka hat einen kleinen Illustrationsfilm über sein Heimatland gemacht, während er in Kalifornien studierte. Die Distanz zum eigenen Land hat es ihm ermöglicht es kritisch  zu betrachten und die Dinge hervorzuheben, die seine Landsleute als normal erachten. Er selbst sagt über den Film: „Mein Ziel ist es Japaner dazu zu bringen darüber nachzudenken, dass nicht alles was zur Zeit in Japan passiert normal ist. Also habe ich ein Video erstellt, das eher die Perspektive eines Ausländers wiederspiegelt, als die Perspektive eines Japaners.“

Für mich ist es immer wieder faszinierend, wenn ein „Einheimischer“ versucht sein Land aus einer vermeintlich fremden Perspektive heraus zu beschreiben, man kann dabei so viel über die jeweilige Person lernen. Obwohl der Film eine ganze Reihe von Klischees und Stereotypen beinhaltet, die ich eher kritisch sehe, denke ich, dass er ein guter Start in unsere japanische Woche ist. Die Illustrationen und Infografiken sind einfach genial.

Probably somebody may have noticed, that I am a little bit obsessed , with japanese arts and crafts. Okay, obsession in general is obviously not a minor flaw in my case, but hey, just for the record I think it’s just an overall enthusiasm.

But now, back to the virtual topic. Japan. Though it’s influence on economics, culture and food is vital, it seems to be  still a strange country.  Kenichi Tanaka a japanese graphic designer made an illustrated movie about his country while he was studying in California, the distance enabled him to gain a wider perspective on  his home country. He says about the film: „My objective is to make Japanese people to think about that everything happening here in Japan, isn’t that normal. So I created this video from foreigner’s point of view, rather than Japanese people’s point of view.“

It’s always fascinating to see a  „native“ trying to get the foreign perspective, you can learn so much about that person. Even though this little film contains quite a lot of cliches and stereotypes I wouldn’t approve, I reason that it’s still a good way to start into our japanese week. The illustrations and infographics are just brilliant.
